ABOUT LEAP INTO DANCE

Put on those dancing shoes and join an accessible and inclusive dance series at The Clocktower. Over a 7-week block, work towards a short-showcase piece to be presented at the last session on our Clocktower Centre main stage.

Lead by experienced supported-needs dance teacher Georgina Bond, this series of dance classes is aimed at dancers wanting to get a groove on while working towards a common goal of creation, exploration and community with an emphasis on connection. During each session the group will work through easy-to-follow warm-ups, free-movement based tasks and choreography creation towards the short-showcase piece.

All class material will be modified for all support needs and physical requirements as we move through the class with ample breaks and optional participation throughout the session material. Dancers who require more 1:1 support are encouraged to have a support worker/carer attend who can participate with the dancer for the duration of the session. Support workers or carers can attend at no cost.

These classes would suit people who are interested in dancing in a group to music and moving their bodies to a group plan. All levels of ability, skill and experience are invited to join these community dance classes

What to bring:

  • Water bottle
  • Comfortable clothing for moving
  • Comfortable shoes

What the classes will entail:

  • Follow the teacher warm up exercises to get your body prepared to dance and move to pop music
  • Free-movement exploration (your own dance moves) where you will be asked to come up with movement based off of the teachers ideas
  • Exploring the use of props in dance (scarf, pom poms, hats, fans – different each week)
  • Creating a beginning-middle-end danced story for a showcase performance. This does not need to be remembered!
  • Options are provided throughout the class to suit all ability levels
  • Ample breaks are provided throughout the session

Further info:

  • The showcase is an informal performance shared between friends. You can choose to be the audience on the day if you want to
  • The showcase will involve free-movement (your own dance moves) to tell a story
  • The class material and showcase is devised to be accessible to all, no matter how many session you attend
  • The classes and showcase will play a variety of music. You can wear your headphone/ear plugs or have a break if you don’t like the song
  • If 1:1 support is needed for successful participation please attend with your Support Worker/Career who can participate with you for the duration of the session
  • You can bring you own sensory tools/fidget tools/plushies to any of the sessions. Please note no sharing for hygiene safety
  • Classes are capped at 10 movers per session.
